Before the nineteenth century the Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs found on walls inside numerous tombs were an unresolved puzzle. The various pictures were generally and falsely believed to be symbolic, representing some sort of object or idea.

In 1799 an amazing breakthrough began when Napoleon's troops stumbled across a black basalt stone embedded in a wall near the town of Rosetta in Lower Egypt.

What came to be known as the Rosetta Stone was a fragment of a larger stone tablet inscribed with three forms of writing:- ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, demotic text and ancient Greek.

Over subsequent decades the secret of the hieroglyphic text was slowly unravelled by two men who commited their lives to the cause of the Rosetta Stone's translation. In reality the hieroglyphs turned out to be mnemonic representations for a spoken language lost for thousands of years.
